To be a good parent is not the easiest job in the world. It requires ample patience, being understanding and making the right decisions. The last condition is of prime importance. Specially in situations which are likely to have a huge impact on the child's entire life. The choice of a school is a prime example of such a situation. To select the right type of school for one's own child is a matter of great concern and anxiety for every parent. Kids, at this point of time, are fresh out of play-schools, which hardly play any role in setting up the child for the rigors and the disciplined arrangements of  school-life.

It is inevitable that kids, when entering the first grade, are not just cautious and apprehensive but outrightly scared to spend so much time away from their home. It is even more difficult for the kids to come out from the mold of play-school, which provided them with a very sheltered environment. The kids also have inhibitions regarding the teacher, the classroom and the other kids. The parents can play a crucial role is helping the child to make this transition from a pre-school attendee to a full-time first grader.

Nowadays, many of the elementary schools have courses during spring time, that let the families of prospective first grade students to come and pay a visit to them. Mostly, these are relaxed sessions that are held all through the school-day. This is a particularly important opportunity for the parents of the prospective students to accompany their child and satisfy all their queries. The child not only gets an opportunity to see the building from inside but is also allowed to interact with a teacher or two. In this way, the parents can also help the child to get familiarized with the school.

Sometimes, the students have to stay at school at the lunch-time. Parents can help the child to adapt in this situation as well. One can assist the child to familiarize with the concept of bagged lunch by following a similar pattern of having bagged lunch at home. Parents and siblings can also follow suit to help the child feel at ease.
