In the United States, there are a lot of institutions as well as universities that cater to the educational requirements of many aspiring youngsters. A lot of them are managed by state government. These colleges offer courses in almost every stream like Arts & Sciences, Biblical Studies, Business Administration, education and Human Services, Nursing, Information Technology and Computing and many, many more to match the latest trends and needs of the society. Students have a lot of options in order  to hit upon the right courses that suit their needs. .

The oldest State University in the US is The College of William & Mary, was formed long back in the year 1693. each and every state is geared up with at least one university and there are a lot of states that are geared up with more than thirty universities. Some of them like Missouri State University and Texas State University were started as teacher training institutions and later they took the form of a full fledged universities with variety of courses. States typically charge higher tuition for students who come from all over the country because of the fact that they do not come under the category of the state taxes net and hence are not contributing in subsidizing the university.

A lot of universities are private entities and one of the reasons that governs to the fall in the number of public universities is the fact that State is not involved in much of the contribution. A lot of public universities offer a lot of programs in law, medicine and other subjects only on the basis of private funding. So far the only federally chartered universities in the US, such as West Point has been those that are under the patronage of the U.S. military.

It is still not confirmed as to whether the US Constitution would make any amendments to ensure the establishment of a federal university system. The American Public University System is build for the purpose of for-profit private university and it is a fact that it is a public university.

Students have got all the freedom to choose their prestigious universities to get quality education in military and civilian public service. A lot of public universities are very selective and that is why they are called Public Ivies. In University of Michigan and University of California - Berkeley, belonging to this genre, a lot of departments are of good and top quality, which take them to the prestigious league of the Ivy League University.

Some of them come under the category of the top twenty include Columbia State University in New York, Stanford in California, Cornell in New York, and University of Chicago in Illinois among others.
