There has been a major increase in the number of people opting for a career in the allied health field. A career within the field of radiologic (x-ray) technology is one of the most sought after ones in this line. As an x-ray technician or radiologic technologist, one has the responsibility to perform diagnostic x-ray procedures.

To pursue this line of career, one has to undergo a training period of two to four years. One can obtain this training in any accredited college or hospital based radiologic technology program. The training should incorporate a mix of basic knowledge and practical application . One will be given classroom instructions as well as hands-on clinical training.

In the training program, one is given a working knowledge of many fields, such as radiographic physics and anatomy, proper patient positioning and technique, radiation safety, quality control, darkroom skills, infection control, body mechanics and sterile techniques. In this line of profession , one needs to be quick on the feet and have the ability to communicate effectively.

Once you have finished your training, you will have to appear for the 'national registry examination' by the 'American Registry of Radiologic Technologists'. This examination tests your knowledge on all fields of radiology and x-ray technology. On passing the exam, you can get the designation RT added to your name, that implies you are a registered radiologic technologist. Some states also need you to have a state license.      

The growing health-care needs of our aging population has ensured a large number of employment options for all x-ray technologists. As a x-ray technologist, you can find employment options in a number of institutions, such as hospitals, freestanding imaging centers, outpatient clinics and private physician offices. As an x-ray technician, you can also advance your specialization in specialized ares. This can give a further boost to your career.

 Some of the areas where you can further your specialization are MRI, Cat Scan, Mammography and interventional radiology. One can attain the specialized training through on-the job training or by participating in specialized training programs. The career prospects of a x-ray technician are indeed quite healthy, and if one has an interest in this field, then he/she should go ahead with it without a second thought.
