One can pursue a very secure and successful in the profession of Nurse. The profession of Nurse is also very satisfactory in the sense that one has the opportunity to help and assist people who are in need. As a career, Nursing is both challenging and rewarding. However, the profession of Nurse is still hugely biased in terms of its gender ratio.

According to surveys, only 2.7% or Nurses were male. Although the percentage has risen a bit over the last 20 years, it is still very unbalanced at 5.4%. This is especially strange, since female doctors have been making huge inroads in the medical field. Ironically. Long back in the 19th century, more than half of the people who provided services of a Nurse, used to be Males. The dramatic skewness in terms of gender occurred early in the 20th century.

One can attribute this skewness to many misconceptions and fallacies about the profession of Nurse. There are many preconceived notions regarding the feminine image, salaries and working conditions, that deter men from entering this profession. Even the term seems to promote this ambiguity,a woman in this profession is is referred to as 'Nurse' but a man is referred to as 'Male Nurse'. Such wrong perceptions are a major reason for this lopsidedness. But question remains, how to remove this imbalance.

Most people answer this question by saying that the image of 'Nurse' needs too be reconstructed. Nurses are seen to be caring, nurturing, sensitive, helpful and friendly. However, one unnecessarily takes these

attributes to be feminine in nature. The need of the hour is to promote the nature of this job as challenging, action-oriented and fast-paced, through various billboards and advertisements. Moreover, it seems quite unfair to associate personality-traits, such as compassion, sensitiveness and caring, to just one gender and the whole public perception regarding this should be changed.

If you are interested in the profession of a Nurse, you may enquire about these misconceptions from Nurses themselves. Flexible schedule, good pay, benefits, job security, good amount of health insurance and an extremes sense of satisfaction are some of the highlights of this profession. If at all, a change is required in the world's perception of how noble tis position is and not in the profession itself. Till date, the Western School has given more than a million ANCC accredited course to prospective Nurses and this proves the popularity of this profession.
