One finds many having the preconceived notion that homeschooling is much cheaper than public schooling. However, that couldn't be farther from the truth by any stretch of imagination. One might think that the lack of a structured curriculum or text might lead to heavy savings from the otherwise compulsory expenditures of public schooling.

To ensure that your child gets a higher and better state of education than that of normal school goers, one needs to be aware of the fact that expenses will steadily mount. Parents following a homeschooling pattern for their child will find regular expenses on a number of factors, such as up-to-date textbooks, course materials, library materials, computing equipment, lighting and even specially designed furniture. The cost is more, or at best, same as that of public schooling. Then again, there might be additional costs for tuitions of specialized subjects such as calculus, science and social studies.

Another important factor that one needs to keep into consideration is the deprived earnings that homeschooling causes. As a result of homeschooling, in most cases one of the parents have to give up their jobs and be tied down to the house in order to take care of the child's needs. This obviously restricts the total income of the family. It has also been observed that families having more than two children hardly opt for homeschooling.

However, homeschooling doesn't always result in mounting expenditures. There have been various cases when a family has managed to successfully carry out the process of homeschooling at low rates. This depends on a number of factors, such as size of the family, the support group, the type of materials used and the availability of the material. Cost reduces substantially when the study material is reused by  successive children. Also, much of the course material can be obtained from vendors or public libraries.

Sometimes, one can even barter his/her expertise. For ex, a mother can teach another's son/daughter dancing exercises and in return, her daughter can get free drawing classes. If you have a support group, the costs of  field trips, visits to science projects and fairs also gets divided.

Irrespective of the cost, the fact that homeschooling is far more beneficial than public schooling, is hardly debatable. The ability to control the type of education the child receives, the subjects he/she studies and the extent to which this knowledge is imparted, makes homeschooling a much better way of schooling than public schooling
