Every public colleges and universities are associated with their respective state governments. These public higher education institutions are an integral part of the society that play significant role in educating the community and improving state and local economies. And local and state governments finance these institutions. But, during past some years, it has been noticed that the government support towards the educational institutions has declined. Investments into education are slowly decreasing.
Economic recessions is one of the main factors after the declining of state’s support for public colleges and universities. Since last so many years, these recessions were declining in terms of state funding; less and less money are being given in the purpose of higher education.
In addition to this the federal government is not giving any kind of attention towards higher education anymore. It is said that Federal and state governments are providing ample responsibilities to municipal and county governments. And some of them are not ready to care about any such responsibility. The reduction in funding has also occurred because public universities are geared up in completing the funding aspect with other state programs like Medicaid, K-12 schools, social services.
For example it is expected from Medicaid that it will put an especially intense focus on higher education funding in the coming years because a lot of public funds are required in order to support the growing population of Baby Boomers.
These are the last times when we can actually sense all kinds of changes in the relationship between states and public higher education. These changes are caused majorly by all kinds of economic and political factors that are developing all over the place. It is a fact that a lot of major public research universities are transforming into quasi-private institutions.
