Importance of College Diversity in Today's Educational Environment
A US Census showed that more than one-fifth of the entire population over 5 years of age in America speaks a language other than English at home. Another astonishing fact is that about fifty percent of the total population is from Miami area alone.

Another example of diversity is an estimation that around 170 different languages are spoken on New York city streets. Bloomberg, the New York city mayor ordered hundred agencies in the city to provide services in six foreign language apart from English. These additional languages are Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Korean and Chinese.

Ethnic diversity is present everywhere in North America. Whether it's factories, offices or schools, you will likely encounter more people from different cultural backgrounds than ever before.

College and universities of North America are also getting diverse student populations. Not only foreign students are choosing to study at North American schools, but US born minorities, the children of immigrants around the world are also making out to the campuses now.

With the presence of students from Native American and African American communities, the campus scene is looking different from what it used to be two years or a generation ago. These diversities are not just about race or culture, but Americans from west coast, east coast, south and middle west have some interesting regional differences also.

With so much diversity, colleges now have to know how to manage this so that the diversity creates a positive rather than a negative impact. Arming the college students with diversity education will help them in functioning better. But diversity skills are not a part of the standard educational curriculum of colleges and universities. However, large number of campus activities are going on to supplement the essential skills of students. Cultural events can be held by college authorities to improve the interaction between students and staff about different cultures.
