Steps to Write a Chemical Equation

Most chemists define chemical reaction on the basis of the empirical evidence of the chemical equations recorded in the laboratory. These equations help chemists to develop many quantitative predictions about the chemical reactions. In other words, it is important to master the skill of writing chemical equations.

We can define a chemical equation as a symbolic representation of a chemical reaction that comprises of three main elements such as the reactants, the products and the amount involved. Unlike, what most students believe, writing a chemical equation is fairly a simple task. You just need to be acquainted with few things like:
  • Usage of the periodic table.
  • Correct manner of writing chemical formulas.
  • Knowledge of few chemical compounds and symbols.
Once you familiarize yourself with these components you'll be able to write chemical equations easily. Some of the common symbols used in chemical equations are:
  • liquid (l)
  • aqueous (aq)
  • gas (g)
  • solid (s)
  •  ===> (yields)
Following are the seven basic steps to write a chemical equation:
  • To identify the reactants.
  • To identify the products.
  • To write the appropriate formulas for the reactants.
  • To write necessary formulas for the products.
  • To write the reactants on the left side.
  • To write the products on the right side.
  • To place an arrow between the reactants and the products.
Here's an example for writing the chemical equation of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid, which produce sodium chloride and water.
  • Reactants: NaOH and Hcl
  • Products: NaCl and HOH
Now, place the reactants on the left and products on the right side of an arrow.

NaOH %2B HCl ===> NaCl %2B HOH
