Online Degree Programs: Fact vs. Fiction

Have you ever thought about the impact that online education has made on our society? It’s been estimated that more than 3.9 million students took at least one online course during the fall 2007 school term.* Many people turn to online degree programs when they want to enhance their education despite geographical or time restraints. Online degree programs also give you the flexibility that traditional degree programs often lack.

Some people still have misconceptions about online learning. They think that online learning is low-budget or a waste of time and money. You might have heard a number of warnings after you expressed your interest in an online degree program. But don’t let other people’s misunderstandings deter you from reaching your educational goals.

Here are a few misconceptions about online learning:

Online degrees aren’t legitimate - Many reputable brick-and-mortar colleges offer online degree programs. Some of these online degree programs are the same as the ones offered on campus. Be forewarned; there are some illegitimate online degree programs out there, so make sure you look into the program’s accreditation before you enroll.

All online degree programs are expensive - Like anything else, online degree programs come in a variety of price points. The key is to shop around for the program and tuition range that meets your needs. Sure, online programs offered by Ivy League schools may be pricier, but you can find reasonably priced programs at state and community colleges as well. Also, think about all of the money that you will save on gas and books just by learning online.

Employers don’t value online degrees - Truth is, most employers accept online degrees … as long as they are from a reputable school. So be careful when you’re deciding on an online degree program. Make sure it is accredited by the appropriate regional agency. It’s also a good idea to make sure that any certification you earn can be used outside of the state that the online school is in.

Online learning programs are boring - The online classroom has drastically changed over the years. Some programs offer live chats, lectures and video tutorials. Other programs allow you to interact with your classmates in the virtual world of Second Life. You’ll be amazed at what you can do on today’s virtual campuses.
