GAMSAT Section I is probably the most popular section among GAMSAT aspirants. They prefer it over the other sections because it contains comprehensive multiple choice questions (MCQs) with some cartoons or tables that do not require any scientific or mathematical knowledge. These passages are based on general topics and the MCQs can be sorted out with simple but sharp logical reasoning skills and a strong grasp over the English language. But like every coin this too has two sides. If one side is greener and appealing to the GAMSAT aspirants, the other side is not so green. Let us discuss all the hurdles and their solutions through the eyes of a GAMSAT aspirant.

If you look carefully into any of the Section I questions prepared by ACER, you will find that the passages consist of lengthy poems or paragraphs which are quiet difficult in terms of vocabulary, language and schematic representations. All these make the entire set of questions quite complex for the candidate. From my personal experience, it seems a candidate may have to read a passage at least twice to understand it clearly. As mentioned earlier, the passages are quiet lengthy and to read them twice consumes some of your valuable time. Hence, while working on individual passage, you have to devote your full concentration on saving your time from an additional reading.

Another aspect that takes up much of you valuable time while answering GAMSAT Section I is spending too much time on a single passage. Some passages in the ACER practice booklets show us genuine complexity in their approach, language and design of questions. I found it completely illogical to spend too much time in solving those passages. If it looks difficult and you cannot get a clear understanding of the passage by reading it once, shift to the next passage and continue your work at a normal speed. For example, I found some poems quiet difficult to tackle as they were lengthy and complex. Remember, you can always come back to the unanswered questions once you complete the relatively easier ones. GAMSAT is a timed examination, so make every minute productive.

GAMSAT Section I can really be fun as it is a high scoring section, irrespective of the candidate’s academic background. The key to succeess in this section is proper concentration and good reasoning skills. Keep these two things in mind and believe me you can crack GAMSAT.
